Penmanship : manuscript, 1826.

A commonplace book written at the Quaker Westtown School outside Philadelphia. Aside from the English poet William Cowper and the Philadelphian Quaker poet Hannah Griffitts, who wrote in the 18th century, the authors are American and English poets of the 19th century, such as Thomas Campbell, Robert Stevenson Coffin, Sarah Franklin, Anne Grant, James Montgomery, Lydia Sigourney, Jane Taylor, Walter Scott, and John Wilson. A few poems are copied twice. Each entry has a title of ornamental letters or a vignette, with one loose note showing the trial design of a vignette. The overall tone of the contents is religious or moral, with some of the selections being hymn lyrics. Some pieces are unattributed and may be Morton's own writing, including responses in verse to a stanza of Lord Byron and to a letter about reading novels.
